Searching for Questions in Q-Bank

Q-Bank provides a facility for easily storing, organising, finding and sharing questions.  Q-Bank is used when:

  • searching for suitable questions to add to an activity;
  • saving questions which have been used in an activity and which might be used again later;
  • importing questions in bulk from other sources;
  • sharing questions with other facilitators either within your institution or globally.

Starting your search

When searching for questions, it is helpful to understand what the purpose of the search is.  If the search is intended to find, select and insert questions into a particular activity, then you should launch the search from the target activity's activity editor page: In the Activities tab, select the target activity, then press "Import Questions" button at the top.

If the search is intended to view and perhaps to select questions for editing purposes, then start the search from the Q-Bank tab.  Bear in mind however that you will not be able to select and export questions to an activity from within Q-Bank.

The Q-Bank page is divided into a main panel in which is displayed the Q-Bank output from your search (the "Candidate Questions"), and the column of controls on the left of the page.  These controls are filters, or search criteria, which you set to determine which questions are displayed in the main panel of Candidate Questions.  By adding to these search criteria, the list of Candidate Questions is progressively focussed until it closely matches all of your requirements.

Search Criteria in Q-Bank

You can apply the following filters to your search, either on their own or in any combination:

Category: Filtering the questions can be as simple as identifying a folder in the "Categories" section;

Scope:  By default the "Scope" of your filter will be limited to your own Q-Bank ("Mine"); however widening the scope to "Institution" or "Global" will potentially make a wider pool of questions available including those questions shared by other facilitators;

Search Term: If you specify some text string as a Search Term, the candidate questions will include only those have matching text in the body of the question or in any question options;

Tags:  Selecting tags allows you to a filter all questions in Q-Bank according to those tags.  Tags are often applied to questions to organise them by topic, allign them with learning objectives, or describe the difficulty of the question.  If multiple tags are selected then all questions which match any one or more of the tags will be included;

Question Type: Filtering by Question type be limit the questions being presented to you to contain only questions of the type specified.

On the right side of the page the Candidate Questions are displayed which meet the current search criteria you specify.  The number of available Candidates is displayed at the top of this list.  This is the number of filtered questions which meet all of your search criteria.
